Frydenbø Maritime Industries' roots go back to 1916, when AS Frydenbø Slip og Mek. Værksted was established in Damsgårdsveien in Bergen. With Karl Gjøvaag as manager, two slipways were built, focusing on the repair of fishing boats in the Bergen region.
As early as 1922, Frydenbø expanded its activities with the production of ship equipment such as wire reels and life rafts. After a challenging period of decline, the tide turned in 1936 when Frydenbø launched the revolutionary rack-and-pinion steering machine - a steering system that became a commercial success and a new standard for the coastal fleet in Scandinavia.
A family heritage in development
Jumping forward a few years and stopping at 1993, Knut Herman Gjøvaag, grandson of the founder, takes over the running of the company. Under his leadership, Frydenbø makes new strategic choices. In 2007, Frydenbø acquires a 15.2% stake in SCHOTTEL-Group in Germany, one of the world's leading manufacturers of propeller systems. In the same year, Brødrene Larsen AS - a renowned electromechanical workshop in Laksevåg - also becomes part of the group. Furthermore, in 2011, Frydenbø becomes part-owner of Øksfjord Slipp & Mek AS in Finnmark, a well-established mechanical business, thus gaining a solid foothold in Northern Norway. At the same time, Frydenbø establishes itself in Ålesund through the acquisition of Elek AS and SKAMEK Service AS. In 2021, Frydenbø will establish itself in Blokken and the new business will be Frydenbø's eighth location in the maritime industry in Norway.
Technological development and sustainable solutions
In recent years, Frydenbø has developed advanced solutions for a greener and more efficient maritime sector. We have created our own product line, aiming to define the future of the maritime industry. The products are designed to meet the needs of the market and bring us one step closer to 0 every day. We will be the do'er in sustainable change. Where you go when you want to do something, today.
One example is the NOx ATS (After Treatment System) exhaust cleaning system, which solved a previously unmet need in the market. It is flexible, easy to customize and meets the strict emission requirements south of the 62nd parallel. The system is tailored for engines from FPT Industrial, one of our key partners.
Another is Dyno Engine Brake , where you can test performance, maintain and run your lifeboat engine under load without putting the boat on the water. This increases safety and extends the lifetime of lifeboat engines.

A new era - new CEO and common direction
On June 1, 2025, Stig T. Andersen took over as CEO of Frydenbø Maritime Industries. He comes from the position as CEO of Grieg Logistics, and has had a central role in the development of sustainable and technology-driven logistics solutions through eight years in the Grieg Group. Andersen has extensive senior management experience from various industries nationally and internationally, as well as extensive experience in production, engineering, operations, board work and operational management in the Armed Forces.
"Frydenbø is one of the cornerstones of Bergen, with a strong position in the maritime industry. Being able to help develop this part of the group further was a major motivating factor for me," says Andersen.
A combined focus on the maritime industry
Frydenbø Maritime Industries is now bringing together the group's industrial maritime activities to create greater power in its efforts.
"This is an important step to strengthen competitiveness, increase the pace of innovation and ensure a more holistic customer approach," says Åsmund B. Heen, CEO of Frydenbø Group and Chairman of the Board of Frydenbø Maritime Industries.
The company will be a clear industrial player based in Western Norway with locations along the entire Norwegian coast.
Three companies - one common direction
Today, Frydenbø Maritime Industries consists of three companies that together drive the maritime solutions of the future:
Frydenbø Yards and Frydenbø Forward are two departments that were previously united under the name Frydenbø Industri. The companies operate in the maritime industry with main areas in fisheries, offshore, defense and aquaculture. Frydenbø Elmarin became part of Frydebø Group in 2025.
Frydenbø Yards specializes in ship servicing and shipyard services, including repair, conversion and maintenance of ships.
Our job is to be there when you need us. Whether you're taking the next step towards sustainable solutions, or need a place where maintenance, repair and service are done properly. We go to great lengths to ensure that you, your boats and your crew are ready for whatever comes, no matter what.
In safe hands.
Frydenbø Forward delivers maritime components and technological solutions for various types of installations, focusing on a large and competent service environment, propulsion systems, marine aggregates and energy-efficient solutions.
At Frydenbø Forward, we believe in the power of movement. We know that creating progress and momentum is as much about experience and tradition as it is about innovation. That's why we combine our long history and expertise with technological solutions to keep the maritime industry moving and on course both today and in the future.
Forward together.
Frydenbø Elmarin designs, builds and installs hybrid and electric propulsion systems in ships.
We believe that the maritime solutions of the future must be smarter, cleaner and more holistic. That's why we do something few others do: We take responsibility for the entire process - from design to installation. We deliver complete hybrid and electric propulsion systems, tailored to each vessel, each need and each task.
For shipyards, shipping companies and ship designers, this means one partner to deal with. This means less risk. More control. More efficient everyday life. We are here to contribute to a more future-oriented, greener and smarter maritime industry. Because it's not just the boat that needs to move forward, it's the entire industry.
Always at the forefront.
